Florida is often overlooked when it comes to Civil War history. Yet, the Sunshine State contributed the highest percentage of Civil War soldiers to the Confederate states than any other Southern State. Florida also contributed four regiments that fought for the Union during the war. She was also the South's primary supplier of beef and salt for the second half of the war.
This event brings in the reenactment group, the Liberty Guards who will be portraying McCants' Artillery (Army of Tennessee) and performing firing demonstrations with their three-inch ordinance rifle. Living historians from the 7th Florida Company K will be giving presentations on the 7th Florida as well as the 7th New Hampshire. Company K (7th Florida) was comprised mostly of residents from Tampa and fought with the Army of Tennessee. The 7th New Hampshire fought extensively in Florida under Union General Truman Seymour, including the pivotal Battle of Olustee in 1864. Capping off the event will be a salt works presentation. Floridians able to produce salt from seawater were exempted from draft into the army and salt works operations large and small proliferated all along Florida's coast during the war.
This event is growing daily. It will now feature:
- 3" ordinance rifle (artillery)
- a 6# cannon
- US/CS Naval presentation
- Salt Works presentation/demo
- Infantry tactics/drill
- Presentation on 7th FL and 7th NH
- Static displays depicting Florida during the Civil War
