Looking to volunteer this fall? Then Gulfside Regional Hospice has the answer! To help people who work and students who normally cannot make orientations during the week, Gulfside will offer two Saturday classes for those interested in volunteering.

The first weekend orientation will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. – noon at Gulfside’s West Pasco Administrative Office located at 6117 Trouble Creek Road in New Port Richey. The second weekend training session will occur on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the Lutz Thrift Shoppe located at 21780 State Road 54 (a mile east of US 41).

Gulfside Regional Hospice is in urgent need of patient care volunteers. Typical roles for this type of volunteer include:
· Assisting at our Gulfside Centers for Hospice Care and Hospice House – at Gulfside Center for Hospice Care in Zephyrhills, there is a great need in helping
to prepare food and sitting with patients
· Visiting with patients and families receiving hospice care
· Providing support to patients at the very end-of-life (Gift of Presence)
· Offering respite care to provide caregivers a needed break

Additional orientations scheduled for September include:
· September 16 and 17 from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Gulfside’s Center for Hospice Care located at 5760 Dean Dairy Rd. in Zephyrhills for all new volunteers in east Pasco.
· September 27 and 28 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Gulfside’s West Pasco Administrative Office located at 6117 Trouble Creek Rd. in New Port Richey for all new volunteers in west Pasco.
· September 30 from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. at Gulfside’s Dade City Thrift Shoppe located at 37925 Sky Ridge Circle for new Thrift Shoppe volunteers.

In addition to patient care volunteering, other volunteer opportunities are available at Gulfside’s administrative offices and at any of the five Gulfside Regional Hospice Thrift Shoppes. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to volunteer at the hospice.

Reservations are required as space is limited. For more information or to reserve a space at any of the orientations, call either of Gulfside’s volunteer coordinators – Kathie Poole at 727-845-5707 for the New Port Richey classes or Heather De Los Santos at 813-780-1235 for the east and central Pasco orientations.

Honoring victims, families, survivors, and responders of the September 11th attacks as well as military and first responders nationally, country recording artist, Michael Ray is coming to the Pasco County Fairgrounds in concert, along with Todd Brown & the River Junction Band on September 11, 2010. Doors open at the Dan Cannon Auditorium at 7 pm, show starts at 8pm, all ages welcome. Michael Ray will also be collecting care package items to be sent overseas for our Soldiers at this event. Please contact the Dade City Chamber of Commerce if you need a list of requested items for our soldiers. All collected items or donations will be taken to the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary for distribution. Habitat for Humanity of East & Central Pasco will be doing the recycling for the event so bring your aluminum cans (www.habitatpasco.org). Pre-sale tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased at the Dade City Chamber of Commerce. Tickets will be available at the door for $20.00. ALL FIRST RESPONDERS GET IN FREE at the door with valid ID: Fire, Police, Military, etc.

Michael Ray is a talented and humble Florida native that leaves an unforgettable stamp on his audience and all those whom he touches with his music. Ray grew up in central Florida on 10 acres of land with his entire family living in different homes on various spots of the property. The togetherness of his family has become a metaphor for his entire life. “My grandparents are my greatest personal influences. I am very lucky to have grown up with the tight knit family I did,” Michael says. “My family has made me very grounded and I believe that this comes through in my song writing. I write things that you can relate to if you are 15 or 50. That is important to me, that the song means something.” This thoughtful approach is evident in Ray’s first record, which he recorded with Austin musician/producer Dwight Baker (Kelly Clarkson, Alana Grace, Bleu Edmondson). Ray, who has a true ability to translate his emotions into song, wrote eight of the 16 cuts which he recorded at Ocean Way Studios Nashville. The combination of Michael’s distinct tone, skillful writing, and determination make him a refreshing addition to the world of country music! www.michaelraymusic.com.

When an urgent call came from Ms. Siobhan Guenta, Parent Involvement Team, to Sunrise Rotary Club of Dade City to ask for school supplies for children in their school, the club stepped up to the plate.

Three Hundred Ten Dollars was collected at the 7 a.m. meeting and off to the store the Rotarians went. Crayons, composition books, pencils, erasers, scissors, notebooks and glue sticks were piled into shopping carts. Paper towels, hand sanitizers, Kleenex and zip lock bags completed the items needed by students.

All supplies were placed in hot pink storage containers and taken to Stanley Park for the “Back to School Bash” held on August 13th. Many organizations and individuals helped to make the Bash a successful event for the anxious students.

Rotary is a thriving service club whose object involves the “Four-Way Test,” 1. Is it the Truth?; 2. Is it Fair to all Concerned?; 3. Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships? and 4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned. Rotarians are to ask these questions of themselves in their everyday business and personal life dealings. Their motto is: “They Profit Most, Who Serve Best, Service Above Self”. Living with these values enables and inspires Rotarians to look beyond themselves and help those in need.

Sunrise Rotary is a Breakfast Club and meets every Thursday at 7 a.m. in the Kokopelli Restaurant, Dade City. Visitors are welcome….start your day early and on the right foot.

Gulfside Regional Hospice named Judy Wilson its Employee of the Year at a luncheon held Aug. 6 at Tampa Bay Golf & Country Club.

Wilson, an LPN, has worked at Gulfside for more than six years. In her current position, she sees patients at facilities in west Pasco. “Working at Gulfside is one of the most rewarding experiences in my nursing career,” Wilson said.

Wilson, along with 11 other Employees of the Month, was a candidate for Gulfside’s Employee of the Year. Each year, the entire employee base votes to present this prestigious award following a creative and fun week of campaigning. “I feel very excited and honored to win the Employee of the Year award,” Wilson said. “Everyone at Gulfside deserves to win the award!”

The Employee of the Year celebration is a chance to highlight the exemplary service of each Employee of the Year candidate, and the reasons he or she is nominated for the award. Wilson’s supervisor, Sharon Chiary, spoke about Wilson’s commitment to Gulfside and hospice care at the luncheon. “Judy exemplifies that Gulfside Regional Hospice’s patients always come first,” Chiary said. “When one of her teammates was out for an extended amount of time, Judy stepped up to make sure every patient was covered. She always goes the extra mile for Gulfside Regional Hospice patients and families, staff, and facilities.”

For her accomplishment, Wilson won $1,000, as well as a clock plaque showing the honor. Wilson’s mother, Delta Christiansen, was at the luncheon to see her receive the award.

“Judy exemplifies the qualities of so many of our Gulfside Regional Hospice employees,” said Linda Ward, Gulfside’s president and CEO. “Her dedication to our patients and their families is tireless and she is the true reflection of hospice care.”

Gulfside Regional Hospice, established as a nonprofit corporation in Pasco County in 1988 and initially licensed in 1989, serves more than 400 patients daily. GRH employs over 250 professionals and has more than 550 volunteers, and is the only hospice that serves Pasco County exclusively.
In an effort to provide jurors a more pleasant atmosphere and create a more positive experience, the Pasco County Clerk & Comptroller’s Office recently coordinated several initiatives, including free bus transportation, computer kiosks with Internet access, and library books.
On July 27, 2010, the Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to continue a program requested by Dr. Paula S. O’Neil, Pasco County Clerk & Comptroller. The program provides free transportation on any Pasco County Public Transportation (PCPT) bus route to the Pasco County Courthouse in Dade City or the West Pasco Judicial Center in New Port Richey for citizens summoned to report for jury service. Lack of transportation has often been cited as a problem for potential jurors. The complimentary bus ride is an excellent opportunity to facilitate jury service and introduce our residents to the benefits of Pasco County’s Public Transportation services. Under the program, citizens reporting for jury service are able to ride the bus by simply showing their summons to the bus driver.
Recognizing how valuable jurors’ time is, computer kiosks have been installed with personal computers to allow Internet access. While complimentary wireless Internet has been available for a few years, some jurors do not bring their personal laptops to jury service. This access allows jurors to keep up with their offices while performing their civic service. All jurors are instructed regarding the limitations and proper use of Internet resources while performing their service. In the most recent initiative the Office of the Clerk & Comptroller partnered with the Pasco County Library System in a joint effort to provide jurors library books while performing their jury service. The books can even be taken home at the end of the day and returned to any Pasco County Library or the courthouse when finished.
The Clerk & Comptroller’s Office is committed to making jury service as comfortable and functional as possible. Improvements such as these will hopefully enhance the experience for our citizens as they perform their civic service as a juror in Pasco County. For additional information on jury service, please visit our website at
